Key Highlights
- A significant unlock is set to release 14,175,778 Hyperliquid tokens on August 29, valued at approximately $1.2 billion based on current prices.
- This release represents 1.4% of the total supply and 2.7% of the market cap of HYPE.
- Insiders will receive nearly 47% of the unlocked tokens, marking the largest single portion in this distribution.
Hyperliquid, a layer-1 blockchain and exchange for perpetual futures, is experiencing a surge, benefiting investors in its native token, HYPE.
The price of HYPE surged to an all-time high of $83.27 on Sunday before retracting to around $77.50, according to data from CoinGecko. The market capitalization of the token hovers close to $19.5 billion. However, this upward momentum is poised to encounter a significant supply release, noted by the tracking site Tokenomics.com as the largest monthly unlock for Hyperliquid.
Since its launch in November 2024, Hyperliquid has systematically unlocked portions of its 1 billion-token supply each month. The upcoming release on August 29 will distribute tokens to three groups: the community, the foundation, and insiders. Insiders, who are early investors, will receive the largest share at 46.6%, while the community will get 46.3% (including grants and rewards), and the Hyper Foundation will receive 7%.
Token unlocks do not necessarily lead to a price drop; however, they do increase the number of tokens available for sale, which can exert pressure on the market if recipients decide to sell. Historical price impacts following previous unlocks have shown mixed results: HYPE declined by 7% in July, increased by 1% in June, and dropped by 14.1% in May.
Traders tend to focus on unlocks directed at investors and early contributors, as these individuals are more likely to take profits than those participating in community pools.
Hyperliquid's recent developments extend beyond token performance. The platform's infrastructure has been integrated into Coinbase's Base app, enabling 50x perpetual futures trading, thereby enhancing its presence in mainstream trading.
Adding to the positive sentiment for HYPE investors, former President Donald Trump mentioned Hyperliquid in a media interview prior to a private meeting with cryptocurrency executives. Although the decentralized exchange for perpetual futures is currently restricted for U.S. users, Trump indicated that the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is working on making Hyperliquid accessible in a compliant manner within the U.S.
This initiative coincides with a more favorable regulatory environment for cryptocurrencies emerging from Washington. Trump also urged Congress to pass a "fair version" of the Clarity Act during a White House crypto meeting.
As HYPE approaches record highs, the upcoming release on August 29 will introduce around $560 million worth of insider tokens into a market already adjusting from its peak. A subsequent unlock of a similar size is scheduled for September 29.
