Hunter Biden is entering the cryptocurrency market by launching a meme coin that plays off his own controversies. The son of former President Joe Biden plans to unveil the LAPTOP coin on September 9, as announced in a post on X.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the LAPTOP coin will be available on Base, an Ethereum layer-2 network designed for faster and cost-effective transactions, which was launched by Coinbase in 2023.
The coin's name is a direct reference to a laptop that a Delaware repair shop provided in 2019, the contents of which were revealed by the New York Post just prior to the 2020 presidential election, sparking a significant political controversy. The Journal indicates that Hunter Biden is actively involved in the project as a founding member, rather than simply endorsing it.

The total supply of LAPTOP will be 1 billion tokens, with 30% allocated to the founders, including Biden, under a vesting schedule that locks these tokens for six months before gradually releasing them over two years. This approach is designed to prevent early dumping by insiders.
Additionally, 20% of the total supply will be used for charitable contributions, liquidity provisions, payments to exchange partners and market makers, as well as covering accounting and legal expenses for the token's foundation.
The team also has plans to burn up to 30% of the total supply based on specific milestones being achieved, such as Bitcoin reaching a new all-time high or a Democrat winning the 2028 presidential election.
Furthermore, 20% of the tokens are earmarked for two airdrop events—free distributions to select wallets—which is a distinctive feature of this project.
Airdrop Targeting TRUMP Token Investors
To qualify for the airdrop, participants must be subscribers to Biden's Substack or members of Andrew Callaghan's Channel 5 mailing list. A portion of the airdrop is also designated for traders who have lost money on TRUMP, Donald Trump's own meme coin. This could represent a significant audience, given that the TRUMP coin has consistently performed poorly since its launch.
Entities associated with the Trump Organization control 80% of the TRUMP token supply, which is also subject to a multi-year vesting schedule. Thus, both Biden's and Trump's meme coins concentrate a large portion of their tokens within the founding teams.
