Three hikers were rescued from Mount Shasta, California, after they used Google's Gemini chatbot for planning their trip. The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office reported that the AI advised them to bring less food and water than necessary.
The hike took them 16 hours, far exceeding their initial estimate of eight hours. They began their descent at night, during which one hiker sustained a knee injury. Disoriented, they spent the night in a canyon. Rescuers helped them with medical care and escorted them back to safety. Authorities stressed the importance of seeking advice from local rangers instead of relying solely on AI for hiking guidance.
