Google Privacy Policy Revision

Google has amended its privacy policy, effective October 16, allowing data from Gmail, Drive, and Google Photos to be utilized for personalized advertising, provided users opt to connect these services with its AI features.

Personal Intelligence and Advertising

This change introduces a conditional element to Google’s longstanding commitment not to use content from these applications for ad targeting. The updated policy states that personalized ads may now be based on user data from these services if users choose to enable connections to Google’s AI functionalities, such as AI Mode in Search and Gemini.

While this feature aims to enhance user experience by providing tailored responses, it also means that the same data can influence the ads displayed to users. Google reassured that advertisers do not have access to the specific contents of users' emails or files, and personal identifying information will not be shared without consent.

User Control and Opting Out

Users retain the option to opt out of this data sharing by adjusting settings in their Google Account under Connected Content apps. However, it’s worth noting that previously collected data may persist in a user's search history, even after disconnecting these apps.

This policy update aligns with Google’s broader strategy to integrate AI across its services, reflecting a shift in how user data may be leveraged for advertising purposes as the company enhances its AI capabilities.
