In a swift move, Google has discontinued its AI image generator, Nano Banana, from Google Earth just 24 hours post-launch. The decision came after users breached service guidelines by distributing misleading AI-generated images.
The tool allowed users to create enhanced visuals of locations and events through text prompts. Among the problematic images that emerged online were fabricated photos depicting an explosion crater in Los Angeles and a submerged U.S. Capitol. Open data researcher Henk van Ess pointed out that his requests—like generating images of refugees at the Mexico border or a nuclear facility in Iran—were not filtered out by the AI.
