Italian startup Generative Bionics has launched Gene.01, a humanoid robot equipped with a comprehensive tactile covering that enables it to interact safely with humans. This innovative product was showcased at the AMD Advancing AI 2026 event, just six months after its development began.
Gene.01 features a unique "skin" that can detect touch, temperature, proximity, and force, allowing it to sense human presence before physical contact. This capability aims to improve safety in collaborative environments, enabling the robot to adjust its actions based on the interactions with nearby humans.
Additionally, the robot can learn through demonstration, taking into account both the motion path and the force needed, such as determining the right grip strength when handling various objects. CEO Daniele Pucci emphasized that this advancement reflects the company's philosophy of integrating physical AI with human characteristics from the design phase, making it applicable in industrial settings.
Generative Bionics promotes Gene.01 as a cohesive system combining physical body, mechanics, and AI, defined as Physical AI. This aligns with their ergoCub methodology developed at the Italian Institute of Technology, which focuses on creating robots capable of safe physical and emotional interactions with humans.
For developers, the robot and its digital twin are available through platforms such as PyPI and Conda-forge. Gene.01 offers three customization tiers: AI capabilities, external design, and actuator components, specifically for hands and feet. Rather than presenting it as a universal humanoid, the company is targeting specific industries.
The first application is being developed in partnership with Fincantieri, aimed at shipyard operations, including a humanoid designed for welding in intricate shipbuilding environments. Generative Bionics, established as a spin-off from IIT in July 2024, successfully secured €70 million in funding by December 2025.
