  • X now allows U.S. users to tap cashtags like $BTC and $TSLA to view real-time charts and initiate trades.
  • Transactions are executed through partnered platforms such as Interactive Brokers, Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken, and Coinbase, not directly through X.
  • This update is part of Musk's strategy to transform X into a comprehensive financial hub, linking market discussions with trading services.

Elon Musk’s X has streamlined the process for U.S. users to convert discussions about cryptocurrency and stocks into actual trades, minimizing the need to leave the app.

The new feature, which is now operational, enables users to tap on a cashtag like $BTC or $TSLA to access live charts and relevant posts, followed by a click on the "Trade" button. This action redirects them to one of X’s partner platforms – Interactive Brokers, Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken, or Coinbase – where they can log in or create an account to finalize their orders.
X facilitates quick actions based on financial discussions on the timeline without acting as a broker; the actual buying and selling remain with the partner exchanges.

For years, cashtags have been a tool for tracking financial market conversations on X. Earlier this year, the platform enhanced them by integrating real-time pricing and charts.

The addition of a direct trading pathway represents a significant step in Musk’s vision to establish X as a more extensive financial destination.

“Cashtags close the gap between a ticker on the timeline and the market itself,” stated Mridul Singhai, X’s product engineering lead, said.

X boasts millions of users globally, with daily active engagement estimated at around 132 million on mobile and over 245 million worldwide across all devices. It also serves as a pivotal hub for the cryptocurrency community, where a single post from a notable figure can quickly influence liquidity across global crypto exchanges.

This “town-square” dynamic distinguishes X from platforms like Discord and Telegram, where discussions are often scattered across private channels. The new feature could further enhance this distinction.
