Coinbase has introduced Agentic Wallets, enabling AI agents to autonomously manage finances and conduct transactions.
Coinbase has launched a groundbreaking wallet infrastructure named Agentic Wallets, tailored for autonomous AI agents. This innovative tool allows virtual assistants to manage funds, conduct transactions, and handle payments independently.

Designed to enhance the capabilities of digital assistants, the Agentic Wallets enable them to earn income, trade tokens, and rebalance their DeFi positions automatically. Built-in security measures are included to prevent any unauthorized transactions.
Coinbase developers, Eric Reppel and Josh Nickerson, highlighted the limitations that AI has faced in financial transactions, stating that while AI can manage tasks like summarizing documents, it struggles with financial management.
Agentic Wallets are built on the x402 protocol, introduced earlier this year, and will allow for fully autonomous transactions once fully operational. This service is an extension of the existing AgentKit tool, which facilitated wallet integration during the creation of agents.
Imagine your assistant identifying a profitable investment opportunity at 3 AM. It can swiftly redistribute your funds based on previously set permissions, all without needing your input.
Enhanced Security Features
The initial rollout of Agentic Wallets will feature integration with Coinbase’s L2 solution, Base, allowing for gasless transactions. Users can utilize a command-line interface to monitor their agents, manage balances, and activate features.
Security is prioritized with Smart Security Guardrails, implementing spending limits and session restrictions. The use of enclave isolation technology ensures that sensitive private keys are shielded within Coinbase’s secure infrastructure.
We are evolving from AI systems that simply advise to those that can act independently within set boundaries, reducing the need for constant human supervision.
Since its launch, the x402 protocol has successfully processed 50 million transactions. Recently, Stripe also announced a new "machine payments" tool that enables developers to utilize AI agents for stablecoin transactions on the Base network using the x402 protocol.
