🏛️ Coinbase Launches Tokenized Stocks on Base

On Monday, Coinbase launched its tokenized stocks on Base, starting with fractional shares of companies like Apple and Nvidia. Users outside the U.S. can now hold real equity in a self-custody wallet, trade it on Aerodrome, or use it as collateral on Aave. The AERO token surged by more than 13% on this news.

Each token represents an actual share held by Alpaca, a regulated broker and custodian, granting holders a direct claim on the share rather than just a derivative. This system is built on a token standard known as B20, which manages dividends and stock splits without altering token balances. This ensures that open lending positions or liquidity pools remain intact when companies like Apple disburse dividends.

This marks the second instance in a week where a U.S. company has rolled out a product unavailable to American users. Earlier, Coinbase introduced perpetual futures on its Base App via Hyperliquid, restricting access to users in the U.S., U.K., and Canada. Last month, Robinhood launched its own layer-2 chain, which included tokenized stocks available in over 120 countries but not in the U.S.

Vlad Tenev, Robinhood's CEO, has been vocal in urging U.S. policymakers to revise regulations, stating it would be peculiar if the world develops ownership models around American assets while U.S. citizens are sidelined. The SEC currently has a tokenized-stock exemption pending, while its new Regulation Crypto Assets proposal focuses on token fundraising rather than equity tokenization.

Despite regulatory uncertainties, Coinbase is moving ahead with its plans. The Base platform anticipates the introduction of more Coinbase-issued stocks and other real-world assets in the forthcoming weeks. While the infrastructure is ready, regulatory clarity remains elusive. Time will tell if U.S. regulations catch up before offshore versions become the norm.
