Coinbase Ireland Faces Significant Fine
Coinbase's Irish operation has been fined approximately $3.6 million by the Central Bank of Ireland due to serious breaches in safeguarding customer funds. This marks the second enforcement action against the cryptocurrency exchange's European arm within a year.
The penalty of €3,252,618 was imposed for violations related to safeguarding and outsourcing rules, occurring between November 2020 and August 2025, under the country’s Electronic Money Regulations. The fine represents a 30% reduction from an initial penalty of €4,646,597, reached by the firm in a settlement agreement on October 21, pending High Court approval.
Regulatory Findings
The Central Bank identified several critical issues with Coinbase Ireland's operations. The exchange was found to be overly reliant on its U.S. parent company for compliance processes, lacking sufficient local oversight expertise. Additionally, it allowed its designated safeguarding account to remain underfunded for extended periods, and failed to adequately communicate any significant changes in safeguarding practices to the regulator.
