Major Arrests in Mafia-Linked Operation
In a significant crackdown, Italian law enforcement has arrested 30 individuals connected to a clandestine banking operation allegedly run by organized crime figures. The arrests took place near Milan, where authorities seized assets worth approximately €21 million (around $23.6 million), including cryptocurrency, luxury items, and cash.
Details of the Operation
The operation was led by the Guardia di Finanza, Italy's financial police, following directives from anti-mafia prosecutors in Milan. The suspects are linked to notorious crime syndicates, including the 'Ndrangheta and the Camorra, as well as organized crime factions from southern Italy. Among those arrested, 16 were taken into custody while 14 were placed under house arrest, with additional arrests occurring in Spain and Switzerland.
Financial Crimes Uncovered
Investigators revealed that the underground bank, based in Pero, was orchestrated by three Italians with established ties to the mafia. They allegedly used shell companies to issue over €110 million in fake invoices, allowing businesses to evade taxes. Funds from these operations were laundered through various channels, including banks in Luxembourg and Lithuania, and converted into cryptocurrency.
