Bitwise CIO Predicts Bitcoin's Resilience Amid AI Uncertainty

Bitcoin Positioned for Success Regardless of AI Outcomes

Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise, has outlined a bullish perspective on Bitcoin in a recent investor note, suggesting that the cryptocurrency is likely to thrive under various macroeconomic scenarios. He likens the situation to a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book where different narratives converge on a common outcome: Bitcoin's value rising.

Hougan asserts that the current macroeconomic landscape presents unprecedented uncertainty, with opinions divided on whether AI advancements will significantly boost GDP or lead to catastrophic outcomes. He explores multiple scenarios, emphasizing that in the event of AI-driven "superabundance," Bitcoin, along with other scarce assets, would become increasingly valuable as productivity surges and wealth concentrates on limited resources.

Conversely, if the AI bubble bursts and results in a recession reminiscent of 2008, Hougan predicts an immediate sell-off in Bitcoin alongside other risk assets. However, he believes that the ensuing government bailouts and extensive money-printing would favor Bitcoin, which he argues is exactly what the cryptocurrency was designed for. He estimates a nearly 100% probability of a government intervention in such a scenario.

In a more moderate growth environment, where the economy stabilizes at around 3% growth and 4% interest rates, Hougan contends that Bitcoin will continue to attract investment through ETFs and institutional adoption, thereby solidifying its market position.

Despite his optimistic outlook, Hougan cautions that Bitcoin's price trajectory won't be linear and could face volatility, as evidenced by its significant drop during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also acknowledges potential risks such as regulatory crackdowns and advancements in quantum computing that might threaten existing cryptocurrency security. Nevertheless, he concludes that for long-term investors, the macroeconomic variables at play are less critical than they might seem, as most outcomes still favor Bitcoin's ascent.
