Weekly Recap: Digital Ruble Launch and GPT-6 Astra Unveiled

Bitcoin soared to $82,000, the Bank of Russia launched the digital ruble, and OpenAI introduced new AI models, marking a pivotal week in both the cryptocurrency and technology sectors.

Bitcoin Reaches New Heights

Bitcoin finished August with a 24% rise and continued its upward momentum into September, hitting $82,000 on September 4, while Ethereum climbed to $2,500. This surge led to liquidations amounting to $536 million, primarily from traders betting against the price increase.

By September 6, Bitcoin's price corrected to $79,700, yielding a modest weekly gain of 0.77%. A key driver of this rally was a record inflow into spot Bitcoin ETFs, with $730 million flowing in on September 3 alone, totaling nearly $986.8 million over five sessions. Ethereum-based funds also saw inflows of $218 million.

Additionally, Bitcoin's correlation with gold reached its highest point since 2020, while its connection to the stock market weakened, according to Andre Dragosh from Bitwise. Despite these developments, analysts have not confirmed a clear trend reversal, with Fidelity suggesting a potential bottom formed in July, but cautioning that further lows may appear by November.

Ethereum remained around $2,490, and several altcoins demonstrated significant movements, including Zcash, which surpassed $1,000 for the first time since 2018. Chainlink's LINK token rose over 50% for the month to exceed $12, aided by partnerships with Bottomline and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The overall market cap for digital assets increased from $2.66 trillion to $2.7 trillion, with Bitcoin's dominance rising to 59.6% and Ethereum's share at 11.1%. The Fear and Greed Index also rose from 69 to 75, indicating increased market optimism.

Digital Ruble Introduced by Bank of Russia

The Bank of Russia unveiled the digital ruble on August 31, with major banks and retailers commencing transaction infrastructure on September 1. Citizens can create accounts on the Central Bank's platform through participating banks, allowing individuals and companies to manage digital ruble accounts with specific limits on deposits and transaction types.

Individuals can top up accounts up to 300,000 rubles monthly, while businesses face no limits. Starting in 2027, transaction fees will apply for businesses, while personal transactions remain free. Concurrently, an industry congress in Moscow is working towards obtaining self-regulatory organization status to establish standards and maintain a registry of participants.

Joint Stablecoin Initiative Announced

On September 2, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Citi, and 18 other banks agreed to form a joint venture to issue stablecoins, beginning with a U.S. dollar-pegged token. This initiative aims for a launch in late 2026, with a dollar stablecoin expected in early 2027, followed by euro and G7 currencies. The tokens will facilitate cross-border payments and comply with relevant regulations.

Public Miners Cut Hashrate Amid Shift to AI

Publicly traded mining firms decreased their combined hashrate by approximately 15% in the first half of the year, a trend linked to repurposing facilities for artificial intelligence applications. In contrast, revenue from AI and high-performance computing surged by 52% in Q2 compared to Q1, indicating a significant shift in focus and investment in computing technologies.

New AI Models from OpenAI and Anthropic

OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra on September 3, initially providing access to select organizations and later expanding to users of its various subscription services. Alongside this, OpenAI initiated a $1 billion program aimed at supporting frontline defenders in sectors like utilities and local governance. The initiative includes subsidized access to AI models and training.

On September 2, Anthropic introduced two new models, Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1, with the former available to all users and the latter featuring enhanced security. The cost of using Fable 5.1 decreased by an average of 25%, with significant savings for complex tasks. The model has produced notable results, including solving historical cryptograms and improving data analysis accuracy.
