Media: Anthropic Proposes $10 Billion Compute Lease to Meta

Anthropic is looking to secure a two-year lease agreement with Meta for computing resources valued at up to $10 billion, as reported by The New York Times, citing multiple sources. The proposal was first made in June, and Meta is currently reviewing the offer.

The arrangement would involve monthly payments, and while either company could opt out of the deal prematurely, specific terms are still being negotiated. This potential partnership presents a challenge for Meta, which currently does not have an established business model for offering computing resources.

Should the agreement go through, it would diversify Meta's revenue streams beyond its traditional advertising income and position it as a competitor alongside current cloud service providers like CoreWeave and Nebius. In previous months, Meta signed substantial contracts with CoreWeave and Nebius worth $21 billion and $27 billion, respectively, for computing power.

Mark Zuckerberg indicated in May that Meta has had interest from external companies wanting to purchase its computing assets. However, Meta has yet to sell any of its equipment as it continues to utilize its resources. Selling excess computing capacity could help alleviate investor concerns regarding Meta's significant investments in AI infrastructure, which are projected to reach $145 billion by 2026, more than double last year's expenditures.

In response to growing demand, particularly due to its Claude Code product, Anthropic has also entered into a substantial agreement with SpaceX, worth $45 billion over three years. Additionally, in June, Meta announced a partnership with Reliance Industries to lease computing capabilities from a new data center in India.
