Anthropic Launches Personal Finance Assistant with Claude

Anthropic has launched a new feature called Personal Finance within its AI assistant, Claude, allowing users to analyze their personal finances by linking their bank accounts. This feature enables users to inquire about spending habits, account balances, and upcoming payments.

The beta version is gradually being rolled out to subscribers of Pro, Max, and Ultra plans in the U.S., accessible through web browsers, mobile apps, and desktops. The assistant categorizes expenses, compares them with previous months, and can identify duplicate charges and unexpected fees. Additionally, it calculates accrued interest, generates spending charts, and creates payment calendars.

Bank accounts are connected via Plaid, a data-sharing service between banks and applications, ensuring users authorize the connection and choose what information to share. Notably, Claude does not have access to users' banking passwords.

“Access is read-only: Personal Finance cannot transfer, manage, or invest your money,” emphasized Anthropic.

According to the documentation, the assistant can view account balances, credit limits, and transaction histories up to two years. Importantly, conversations in the Personal Finance section are not used for training models. However, users are warned that account balances may update with a delay and that AI calculations might contain errors. The tool aims to assist users in understanding their personal finances and is not intended for investment advice.

Furthermore, Anthropic stated that there would be no advertisements or paid recommendations within the feature.

Pompliano's Allegations

Following the launch, crypto investor Anthony Pompliano accused Anthropic of attempting to gain confidential information from his company, Silvia, which offers an AI-based personal finance director that integrates data from various accounts, investments, and cryptocurrencies.

Let me tell you a story about how unethical Anthropic is. In April, the Anthropic team began heavily courting our engineering team to tell them corporate secrets, technical details, and future plans for @cfosilvia. ... The only thing worse than being a trillion-dollar company that can’t beat a 10-person team is being a trillion-dollar company that no one trusts and everyone knows is unethical.

Pompliano claimed that Anthropic's representatives engaged with Silvia engineers starting in April, under the guise of interest in their growing popularity and computational needs. He alleged that this was an attempt to extract sensitive information about how Silvia's product was developed and its success.

Despite invitations to dinners, Silvia’s team refused to disclose any sensitive information and received a warning just days before the launch of Personal Finance about the competing product. Pompliano also mentioned that Silvia has been working for about six months to decrease its reliance on major AI companies, achieving a significant reduction in computing costs by using its own models and hardware.

In the third quarter, Anthropic experienced a decline in operating profitability due to reduced fees for using Claude and a sharp increase in server costs.
