U.S. Congressional candidate Alex Bores has proposed an "AI Dividend" program. This initiative aims to provide direct payments to citizens if automation leads to widespread job losses.

Today, I’m proud to announce the AI Dividend, my plan to prepare for the AI economy with direct payments to Americans funded by tax reform that simultaneously incentivizes hiring humans instead of AI.

Bores cites expert predictions that artificial intelligence could replace up to 50% of jobs, particularly affecting entry-level positions.

The program would automatically activate upon reaching certain economic indicators:

  • prolonged declines in employment levels;
  • decreases in wages in specific sectors;
  • increased productivity from AI without the creation of new jobs.

In addition to payments, the project includes funding for retraining programs and enhanced oversight of technologies. The document does not specify the amounts or frequency of payments.

To fund the initiative, Bores proposed several mechanisms:

  • a tax on the use of AI tokens;
  • the government's right to purchase stakes in AI companies at a discount;
  • tax reforms.

The initiative's author believes these mechanisms should be implemented before a small number of companies accumulate excessive profits from automation. He argues that it will be much harder to change the system after a significant displacement of workers from the job market.

It is worth noting that in April, Oracle began laying off thousands of employees amid falling stock prices and significant capital expenditures on AI infrastructure.
