  • Zcash developers have introduced Udon, which integrates aspects of the proposed Tachyon scaling upgrade into Zakura Common, the software framework for private transaction verification.
  • Previously, enhancements to Common reduced the time for creating private transactions from over three seconds to under 200 milliseconds in some cases, while Tachyon seeks to manage increased network demand.
  • While Udon initiates the integration, it does not yet showcase Tachyon’s speed, and the upgrade will need further development and a security audit before it can be activated.

The team behind Zcash, a privacy-centric cryptocurrency, is integrating elements of its proposed scaling upgrade into existing software, paving the way for a future with significantly more private transactions.

This new component, called Udon, was initially developed for Project Tachyon, Zcash's anticipated scaling upgrade.

Released on Monday, Udon is now part of Zakura Common, a shared cryptographic library utilized by Zakura and other Zcash initiatives, as explained by Project Tachyon lead Sean Bowe. Zakura Common functions as software that undertakes substantial mathematical computations required for generating and validating private transactions. Bowe's team collaborates with Dev Ojha's Valar Group in the development of Zakura.

A Zcash wallet must validate that a private payment is legitimate without disclosing the identities of the sender and recipient, or the transaction amount. Network computers then verify this validation.

Prior enhancements to Common successfully reduced the time it takes to create a private transaction from over three seconds to less than 200 milliseconds in certain tests, as CoinDesk reported in August.

If the frequency of private payments increases, the network's computers will need to manage a larger volume of data.

Udon incorporates some of the computations necessary for Tachyon’s scaling upgrade into Common, allowing developers to build upon existing code that has already been optimized for speed. Although Udon is now available as software, the upgrade itself has not yet been implemented on the Zcash network.

Bowe and Ojha have set an ambitious goal of achieving over 50,000 payments per second. They project that at this volume, each Zcash node would need to process more than 500 megabytes of data every second using current cryptographic methods.

Tachyon aims to consolidate proofs from multiple payments, reducing the data load for the nodes. If many payments can share a single proof, there will be less information for Zcash computers to verify. However, creating such a proof requires additional memory, which is why Bowe’s team is enhancing it using the faster code developed for Common.

As of Tuesday, Zcash has not yet reached that ambitious transaction volume. According to ZecStats data, the network averaged about 11,700 transactions involving shielded funds per day in the week ending September 21, equating to roughly one every seven seconds. This average dropped to approximately 6,200 transactions daily in the week ending September 28.
