Zcash holders have shown overwhelming support for quicker transaction times and the preservation of the network's halving schedule in a recent governance vote, with participation from nearly two-thirds of eligible ZEC tokens.

Approximately 2.4 million ZEC, representing around 66% of the eligible tokens, cast their votes regarding the upcoming NU7 network upgrade. The voting results were based on the amount of ZEC held, rather than the number of voters, meaning each ZEC equated to one vote.

Voting Participation and Results

To consider the results valid, organizers required a minimum turnout of 1 million ZEC. An impressive 99.9% of the participating tokens favored reducing the block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, which would lead to faster transaction confirmations for users.

Additionally, 98.9% of the votes supported maintaining the existing bitcoin-style halving schedule. This halving process is crucial as it cuts the mining rewards in half at predetermined intervals, rather than gradually decreasing them over time.

The voting mechanism itself is notable. Only ZEC held in Ironwood, the latest private transaction pool, was eligible to participate. This privacy feature ensures that while the blockchain can verify the existence and correct spending of coins, it does not disclose wallet balances or transaction specifics.

This voting system allows holders to leverage their economic stake without revealing the extent of their holdings, which adds a layer of privacy to the voting process. Votes were encrypted and fragmented into 16 pieces to ensure anonymity while counting the results.

In contrast to the previous polling in February, which saw only 7.25% of circulating ZEC participate and highlighted significant divisions among holders and the Community Advisory Panel, this new system introduced in the summer has significantly enhanced privacy for coinholders.

Moreover, 96.6% of voters opted to postpone the reissuance of funds collected via the Network Sustainability Mechanism until February 2031.

Implications for Zcash

This approach will remove a portion of funds from circulation, including at least 60% of transaction fees, which will later be recycled through future mining rewards, without altering Zcash's maximum supply.

The decision to retain the halving schedule while allowing fees to accumulate before being returned to miners demonstrates a strategic move for the network's growth.

Additionally, there was a strong consensus to expedite the NU7 upgrade, with about 99.3% voting to implement it as soon as possible, even if it meant omitting features not ready by the September 30 deadline.

The proposal to reduce block times aligns with ongoing efforts to make private ZEC transactions significantly faster. Recent reports indicated that new software had already reduced proof-generation times on mobile devices from over three seconds to under 200 milliseconds.

While this vote clarifies the direction for NU7 after previous disagreements, it does not immediately alter the network, as the proposed features still need to be developed and tested before being integrated into the upgrade.

Almost 2.4 million ZEC participated in this historic decision-making process while keeping their individual balances confidential, showcasing how Zcash's privacy mechanisms are being utilized to shape the future of the network.
