Key Points
- Zcash has dropped 11% in value over the past 24 hours, now valued at $18.5 billion.
- The decline follows a substantial price increase, leading to increased leverage in the market.
- Concerns over AI's potential to undermine crypto encryption could also be impacting Zcash's performance.
Zcash, a privacy-centric cryptocurrency, has seen its value plummet by 11% within the last day, bringing its market capitalization to approximately $18.5 billion. This decline is notable as it follows a period of impressive gains for the token, which has surged 460% since March.
Experts point out that this recent downturn is likely a consequence of the leverage that built up during Zcash's rapid ascent. Luke Nolan, a senior researcher at CoinShares, noted that such leverage can amplify losses when the market shifts. He explained, "There was a decent build-up of leverage on the way up... when there is a sneeze, the moves get amplified as those leveraged traders are either forced to reduce exposure or get liquidated." Indeed, in the last 24 hours, liquidations of Zcash long positions amounted to $17.9 million, significantly higher than other platforms during the same timeframe.
Concerns over Encryption and Quantum Resistance
In addition to market dynamics, broader industry concerns about encryption vulnerabilities due to advancements in AI have emerged. Recently, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin highlighted the need for the crypto sector to prepare for significant changes in encryption security, potentially before quantum computers become a threat. This has raised alarms among privacy-focused cryptocurrencies like Zcash.
