Overview

  • Derive has begun accepting FXRP from Flare as collateral for trading XRP options and perpetual futures.
  • Traders can engage in transactions directly from their wallets, eliminating the need for centralized exchanges.
  • Settlements for options occur in USDC, which introduces margin and liquidation risks for traders.

XRP holders now have the ability to utilize Flare's FXRP as collateral for trading options and perpetual futures on the decentralized exchange, Derive, as announced by Flare on Thursday.

Flare explained that users can mint FXRP, a token that represents XRP within the Flare blockchain, via its FAssets bridge. This technology converts various tokens, including Bitcoin, XRP, and Dogecoin, into ERC-20 tokens compatible with the Flare network. These tokens can then be deposited into a Derive Portfolio Margin V2 account, allowing users to trade derivatives from their own wallets.

Options provide traders with the right to buy or sell an asset at a predetermined price, while perpetual futures allow speculation on price movements without a set expiration. XRP holders can leverage these products to hedge against market losses, earn premiums by selling options, or speculate on price fluctuations.

“Options are frequently the final significant market to emerge around an asset, and XRP has been awaiting the necessary infrastructure,” stated Nick Forster, founder and CEO of Derive. “With FXRP, one of the largest holder bases in crypto now has a reliable on-chain path, and the addition of Derive’s options markets enables capital to be hedged, earn premiums, and traded with the same level of sophistication as other major assets.”

Derive’s XRP options settle in USDC instead of XRP. If an option expires profitably, Derive compensates the trader with the difference in the stablecoin pegged to the dollar, while the FXRP remains as collateral. Sellers of options are required to maintain sufficient USDC to cover settlements and meet margin requirements to avoid liquidation risks.

This integration enhances the utility of FXRP within the decentralized finance ecosystem. Earlier this month, FXRP was also recognized as collateral by the DeFi risk management firm Sentora for its RLUSD Main vault on the Ethereum-based lending platform Morpho, enabling XRP holders to convert FXRP to Ethereum and borrow Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin without the need to sell their XRP.
