Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has stated that since the publication of the 2023 roadmap, the focus on quantum resistance, privacy, and AI-driven security has intensified.

In a post on X this Monday, Buterin compared the initial goals of the 2023 roadmap with Ethereum’s current “Strawmap,” which outlines the network’s long-term technical objectives.

“What stands out is that some entirely new elements are now included in the strawmap that were absent from the original diagram, indicating a shift in priorities,” Buterin noted. “These reflect changing priorities.”

Key priorities now include enhanced privacy and scaling solutions tailored for a post-quantum landscape, as well as efforts to streamline Ethereum’s technical specifications, referred to as the “lean-ification of the spec.”

Buterin explained, “A recurring theme in scaling, evident in both state types and zkzk frameworks (both novel concepts), is that rather than attempting to maximize the scalability of all Ethereum activities, we aim to develop specialized mechanisms with more limited properties that enhance scalability while accommodating the heaviest loads from users and applications today (like token transfers and swaps) and into the future (such as privacy protocols).”

He also mentioned that advancements in AI are enabling broader applications of these techniques within Ethereum.

Buterin indicated that Ethereum is increasingly utilizing STARKs, a cryptographic method for verifying computations, along with AI-assisted verification to ensure the protocol operates as intended.

“This can only be secure with formal verification, which is achievable thanks to modern AI tools,” he asserted.

This update comes as Ethereum ramps up preparations for “Q-Day,” addressing the potential risks associated with quantum computing.

Earlier this year, Buterin encouraged developers to implement quantum-resistant cryptography before the threat becomes pressing, leading to the establishment of a dedicated post-quantum team within the Ethereum Foundation. In February, he detailed a phased approach to replace four components of Ethereum’s cryptographic framework that could be vulnerable.

In July, Buterin placed quantum safety and privacy at the forefront of his proposed “Lean Ethereum” initiative, advocating for the transition to quantum-safe cryptographic alternatives.

“Ethereum will be quantum-safe. Ethereum will prioritize user privacy. Ethereum will be secure,” Buterin affirmed. “Ethereum will resist censorship. Ethereum will be highly efficient and scalable while meeting these goals. And Ethereum will be Lean.”
