Uber has set a monthly limit of $1,500 per employee for using AI services. This restriction applies to coding tools like Claude Code and Cursor, according to Bloomberg.
Expenses for each service are tracked separately. Employees monitor their spending through an internal dashboard and can request additional funding in special cases.
Uber stated that these limits are intended to help "responsibly" develop experiments with agent-based AI within the company. Bloomberg reports that this measure was implemented in recent months and applies only to programming tools.
This decision follows a rapid increase in internal AI usage. In April, Uber's CTO Pravin Npalli Naga reported that the company had already exhausted its annual AI budget. Previously, Uber encouraged employees to use AI "as much as possible" and compared teams based on their activity in internal rankings.
In May, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi stated that about 10% of the company's code changes are generated by AI agents. He noted that the use of such tools has increased not only among developers but also in legal and marketing teams.
Uber also announced it would slow down hiring, considering the impact of internal AI applications.
Uber's COO Andrew McDonald acknowledged that the company currently finds it challenging to directly link the rise in AI spending to the emergence of new useful features for customers. He mentioned that this connection may become clearer in the future, but it is difficult to establish even with the growth of internal metrics.
It is worth noting that in November 2025, Uber launched a self-driving taxi service in Abu Dhabi.
