  • Tesla has kept its bitcoin treasury at 11,509 BTC, marking nearly four years of stability without any transactions involving the cryptocurrency, while reporting an after-tax impairment loss of $112 million.
  • During the second quarter, bitcoin's value decreased by 14%, dropping from approximately $83,000 to $58,000, before recovering to around $65,840.
  • The company’s second-quarter results were mixed, with revenue of $28.2 billion exceeding estimates, but adjusted EPS of $0.33 falling short of expectations.

Tesla (TSLA) has not altered its bitcoin BTC$65,883.41 holdings during the second quarter, maintaining a total of 11,509 BTC as the cryptocurrency's price experienced a 14% decline over the quarter.

The electric vehicle producer disclosed an after-tax impairment loss totaling $112 million on its digital asset holdings in its recent earnings report. The company has not engaged in any bitcoin transactions since 2022.

Bitcoin's price fell from around $83,000 at the beginning of the second quarter to about $58,000 by the end of June, influenced by broader macroeconomic uncertainties and fluctuations in risk assets. Currently, the cryptocurrency is trading at approximately $65,840.

Tesla remains one of the largest publicly traded corporate bitcoin holders, although its holdings are significantly lower than those of companies like MicroStrategy (MSTR), which continues to actively acquire more cryptocurrency.

The company's cryptocurrency update coincided with its mixed financial results for the second quarter. Tesla reported a non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.33, which was below analyst expectations of $0.55. However, revenue reached $28.2 billion, surpassing the consensus estimate of $27.6 billion.

The gross margin stood at 16.8%, while the GAAP net income was reported at $1.11 billion. Additionally, the company recorded a negative free cash flow of $1.1 billion for the quarter.

According to current accounting standards, companies holding digital assets must reflect any decreases in the value of their holdings in their earnings. Although bitcoin has rebounded from its late June lows to around $65,840, the impairment loss indicates the value of Tesla's holdings as reported during the earnings period.

Tesla's bitcoin holdings have remained relatively stable for almost four years. The company initially acquired $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin in early 2021 and briefly accepted it as payment for its vehicles, but later suspended this option due to environmental concerns. It sold about 75% of its bitcoin holdings in 2022, retaining the remaining 11,509 BTC since then.
