Fans of Taylor Swift may soon have the opportunity to create AI remixes of her tracks legally on Spotify.
On Thursday, Spotify and Universal Music Group revealed new licensing agreements that will permit Spotify Premium subscribers to produce AI-generated covers and remixes using music from select artists and songwriters.
“The most valuable innovations in the music business always bring artists and fans closer together,” stated Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group. “This pioneering AI-enabled superfan initiative is designed to foster human artistry, enhance fan connections, and create new revenue streams for artists and songwriters.”
Universal Music Group's roster includes prominent artists such as Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, The Weeknd, Sabrina Carpenter, Lana Del Rey, Post Malone, Billie Eilish, and Olivia Rodrigo.
The debate surrounding AI-generated music intensified in 2023 after a fake track featuring AI renditions of Drake and The Weeknd gained traction on Spotify and YouTube, leading Universal Music Group to demand its removal. Recently, Taylor Swift sought to trademark elements of her image and voice due to the proliferation of AI-generated deepfakes and counterfeit endorsements targeting her online.
This announcement aligns with a trend as technology platforms explore AI remix functionalities. Earlier this week at Google I/O, YouTube unveiled a Shorts Remix feature that utilizes Gemini Omni, allowing users to transform existing videos into anime, pixel art, or modified scenes with new characters and effects.
According to Spotify, this new feature will be offered as a paid extension for Spotify Premium users. Fans will have the ability to create licensed covers and remixes through generative AI technology, with compensation provided to participating artists and songwriters based on the AI-generated content produced on the platform.
“Solving tough challenges in music is what Spotify excels at, and fan-created covers and remixes are our next step,” remarked Spotify Co-CEO Alex Norström. “Our development focuses on consent, credit, and fair compensation for the artists and songwriters involved.”
