The Solana team has implemented the first phase of a reduction in average slot time from 400 ms to 350 ms on its main network, as part of the SIMD-0525 improvement proposal.

Validators using the Agave v4.2 client have activated this initial step in a four-phase plan to shorten slot times. This marks the first reduction in slot length since the network's launch.
A slot refers to a fixed time window during which the leader validator creates a block. This reduction is expected to expedite transaction confirmations, with future plans to further decrease the slot time to 300 ms, then 250 ms, and ultimately 200 ms.
Each subsequent phase will have its own activation mechanism and will be rolled out sequentially in later epochs. A single epoch in Solana comprises 432,000 slots, approximately two to three days. The approved schedule allows for the upgrade to be paused if there is an increase in the percentage of missed blocks.
As of the time of this report, the average slot time stands at 370 ms, and over a ten-minute timeframe, it is at 366 ms.

Shorter slots decrease the duration during which a single leader controls block assembly. Additionally, the Solana team has linked these changes to previous improvements, such as Turbine and Replay, which have optimized block distribution and reprocessing by clients.
In terms of market performance, the price of SOL has increased by nearly 4.5% over the past day, nearing $95. This growth outpaced Bitcoin's rise of 1.6% and Ethereum's 2.6%, although it lagged behind XRP and Dogecoin, which saw increases of 21% and 10%, respectively.
