On Friday, Solana announced a reduction in its target slot time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds, resulting in a nearly 17% increase in speed according to blockchain data, though this does not translate to a rise in total transaction capacity.

To illustrate this change, consider a busy train station at a financial hub. The station has decreased the waiting time between trains from 30 seconds to 25 seconds. While the same number of passengers can still board each train, the overall capacity per hour does not increase.

However, this adjustment helps alleviate congestion on the platform, allowing passengers to move more swiftly and preventing bottlenecks at the gates. Solana's changes function similarly; by decreasing the time between blocks (akin to trains), transactions experience less waiting time.

A slot represents a brief period during which a designated validator can add a block. With the new 250-millisecond target, Solana aims to achieve four slots per second, an increase from approximately 3.3, thus providing wallets, exchanges, and trading applications with more current network data.

Validators, which are entities that contribute computing power to maintain the blockchain, will now lead for four consecutive slots. The faster block time reduces each leader's control window from 1.2 seconds to one second, passing transaction-ordering authority to the next validator more quickly.

This acceleration is crucial for applications like oracle-driven markets and automated market makers, where outdated prices or a slight delay can impact transaction execution.

Users can expect quicker transaction updates, while swaps will have a shorter window for market fluctuations before they reach the network, potentially reducing failed trades and the risk of receiving significantly different prices than anticipated.

Despite the speed increase, Solana does not gain 17% in raw capacity. According to SIMD-0525, the allowed computation and data per slot decreases in proportion to the slot duration. Although more slots are created each second, each slot carries less workload, keeping the network's overall processing limit relatively constant.

This adjustment means that the infrastructure will need to handle more individual blocks, and applications that calculate time based on slot numbers multiplied by a fixed duration will also experience changes, with blockhashes expiring more quickly. Consequently, this reduces the time available for offline signing, delayed approvals, and other transaction processes that rely on human input.

This change marks the third phase in Solana's transition from 400-millisecond slots to 350, 300, and now 250 milliseconds. As an epoch remains fixed at 432,000 slots, its expected duration has decreased from approximately 36 hours to 30 hours.

A further reduction to 200 milliseconds could enable five slots per second and shorten epochs to around 24 hours, but no mainnet launch date has been set. Developers indicated that the network will proceed only if the block-skip rates remain acceptable after reaching the 250-millisecond phase.
