  • Solana's Alpenglow upgrade aims to reduce transaction settlement time from 12.8 seconds to approximately 150 milliseconds and is currently live on its devnet and testnet.
  • This upgrade modifies the method by which validators reach consensus and will eliminate validator votes from blocks, leading to lower transaction totals reported even with unchanged user activity.
  • A definitive launch date for Alpenglow's mainnet has yet to be established, and the targeted speed has not been validated under real market conditions.

Solana's anticipated update, designed to finalize transactions in a matter of milliseconds, has successfully transitioned to its public developer network, allowing developers to test their applications before they are deployed on the blockchain that handles actual funds.

Named Alpenglow, this upgrade aims for a finality time of around 150 milliseconds, significantly reducing the current average of 12.8 seconds.

This enhancement could expedite processes such as fund releases by exchanges or notifications to merchants confirming completed sales.

Anza, the firm responsible for developing Solana's core software, announced the transition to the developer network on September 25, following the completion of the switch on a separate testnet. The Solana Foundation's upgrade page confirms that Alpenglow is now active on both networks.

Developers utilize the developer network (devnet) to test applications using tokens that hold no actual value, while the separate testnet is mainly focused on stress-testing network software and validator functionalities.

The Alpenglow upgrade alters how validators, the nodes responsible for transaction verification, reach consensus on the network’s records. They will now share votes directly rather than recording them as transactions within blocks added to the blockchain, thus potentially achieving agreement in just one or two voting rounds.

This change will also lead to a decrease in certain Solana activity metrics, as transaction totals that include validator votes will decline, even if the volume of user transactions remains unchanged. The Foundation has instructed data providers to modify their metrics accordingly.

Services that compile transaction histories must ensure that competing candidate blocks are kept distinct until one is chosen by the network to avoid incorrect records.

According to the Foundation’s guidelines, applications that only send transactions and read account balances will not require any migration.

It is important to note that the speed target is based on simulated results and has yet to be demonstrated in real market scenarios. Additional processing time may be introduced by wallet services and exchanges during their deposit verification processes.

No official date has been set for the launch of the live network. Anza's software timeline tentatively indicates that feature activations may resume on September 28, but this date has not been confirmed as the launch for Alpenglow.
