Senator Cynthia Lummis has expressed frustration over the ongoing demands from Democrats for further amendments to the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which she has been involved with for over five years.
Negotiations Reach a Stalemate
During a recent event hosted by the Solana Policy Institute, the Wyoming Republican stated that the current proposal is the best that can be achieved. Despite Republicans circulating what they deemed a final compromise over the weekend, Lummis indicated that Democrats continue to push for additional changes.
"The Democrats want more," Lummis remarked on Monday. "They always want more. If we waited another month, they would want more." She lamented that there seems to be no limit to their requests.
Lummis highlighted the substantial concessions made to Democrats during the negotiation process, noting that she has recorded 114 individual policy points that were adapted in the bill. One significant concession involved restrictions on government officials maintaining personal business ties with the crypto industry, particularly aimed at President Donald Trump.
She expressed surprise at Trump's willingness to accept a revised version of the ethics rules affecting him and other officials, as reflected in the latest draft of the legislation.
"The Democrats wanted more, and much to my surprise, the president has agreed to give more," she added.
As the Senate prepares for a crucial vote on the Clarity Act, Lummis acknowledged uncertainty about whether it would secure the necessary 60 votes for advancement. The atmosphere at the event was charged with lobbyists speculating on the bill's chances, with even the most optimistic voices indicating a slim possibility of success.
Upon arriving in Washington after a trip to her Wyoming ranch, Lummis inquired about the latest developments regarding the bill and learned that Democrats were still requesting further revisions. "This is as good as it's going to get," she asserted, urging Democrats to support the legislation. "My tank is empty."
