As the yield on U.S. Treasury securities, considered the risk-free rate, continues to rise, the implications for financial markets, including cryptocurrencies and stocks, become significant. While crypto enthusiasts may view these changes as minor, a sharp increase in yields could lead to competition for capital among various asset classes, often resulting in market turmoil.

Jurrien Timmer, the global macro director at Fidelity Investments, pointed out this trend in a recent post on X, noting that rising yields from the 1960s to the mid-1990s made government bonds attractive compared to equities.

Investors who overlooked the increased opportunity costs faced harsh lessons during the 1987 market crash, known as Black Monday, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted by 508.32 points, or 22.6%, marking the largest one-day percentage drop ever recorded.

Timmer's insights are particularly relevant today, as Treasury yields have been climbing since the market downturn in 2020, indicating a potential return to a long-term uptrend that began in the late 1950s. Currently, the 30-year yield is at its highest level since 2007 and may rise further if the upcoming U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) report exceeds expectations, reinforcing predictions of sustained higher interest rates from the Federal Reserve.

An increase in yields necessitates that all assets, including stocks and bitcoin, must demonstrate stronger earnings or cash flows to justify their valuations. Unlike stocks, bitcoin's situation is more intricate since it lacks earnings and cash flow; its worth is primarily based on its perception as digital gold and a safeguard against currency devaluation.

This scenario doesn't guarantee a repeat of past crises that negatively impacted both stocks and bitcoin. However, it is evident that the previously abundant capital, which was primarily driven by narratives and momentum, now has a safer alternative in rising Treasury yields.

In this context, projections for bitcoin's price to reach $500,000 or even $1 million in the coming years might seem overly optimistic. Investors are advised to remain vigilant.

The chart illustrates daily movements in bitcoin's 30-day implied volatility index, BVIV. This index, derived from options pricing, reflects market expectations for volatility and the demand for hedging.

BVIV has bounced back from a long-standing support level near 36%, which aligns with recent declines in bitcoin's spot price. Historically, these two metrics have moved inversely, making the index an important indicator to watch for potential market stress.
