The release of version 1.1 of the XRPL AI Starter Kit introduces the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) alongside the Open Wallet Standard, enabling a streamlined approach to wallet management across multiple chains as outlined in a recent RippleX developer update.
According to Jazzi Cooper, head of product at RippleX, the goal is to establish XRP and RLUSD as premier payment options for developers. RLUSD is Ripple's stablecoin tied to the US dollar.
Earlier this year, Ripple included support for the x402 payment standard, and now with the integration of both x402 and MPP, it demonstrates a commitment to adopting multiple standards rather than selecting one exclusively.
The MPP allows AI agents to execute payments effortlessly, where the agent can authorize a payment based on a service's quote, facilitating the delivery of the requested resource. This protocol was developed collaboratively between Stripe, a payments company, and Tempo, which focuses on blockchain solutions for payments.
Impact of the Integration
For AI agents acquiring data or computational resources, having a widely accepted currency and reliable payment infrastructure is vital. Ripple's objective is to ensure that both XRP and RLUSD are suitable currencies for services that charge machines per request.
With support for both x402 and MPP, developers can accept transactions on the XRP Ledger regardless of the standard they choose to use.
Businesses utilizing Stripe and Tempo’s open protocol can now facilitate payments in XRP or RLUSD, effectively integrating Ripple into applications where developers previously chose their payment standard before selecting a blockchain solution.
The XRP payment channels are especially beneficial for services with small, recurring fees, enabling an agent to fund their account once, conduct multiple paid queries, and approve additional expenditures per response. This configuration allows the service provider to receive full payment without documenting every transaction on the blockchain.
This positions XRP as a potential reserve for session-based payments. While individual transactions can utilize tokens like RLUSD, the session functionality presently requires XRP, with the integration of stablecoins contingent upon a future ledger upgrade.
The payment software remains in beta, and Ripple's announcement did not reveal specific commercial clients using the MPP integration or disclose any payment volume data.
