QuSecure has conducted tests of its post-quantum cryptography platform, QuProtect R3, on tactical systems used by the U.S. Army during the Project Convergence exercises.

Following field trials, the solution achieved a technology readiness level (TRL) of 7.

Defense Against Future Quantum Threats

QuProtect R3 was deployed to secure communications against quantum attacks in tactical networks, as well as to manage cryptographic operations and detect algorithms in use. According to QuSecure, the testing involved military personnel operating in conditions that closely resembled real-world scenarios.

Project Convergence Capstone 6 is an annual training exercise held at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, involving thousands of soldiers and aimed at testing new technologies and combat concepts.

From SBIR to Field Application

The TRL 7 designation indicates that the prototype or system was demonstrated in environments similar to real-world conditions. QuSecure spent nearly two years refining QuProtect under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program in collaboration with the Army's C5ISR division, tailoring the platform for tactical networks.

However, a full-scale deployment of QuProtect within the U.S. Army is not yet on the horizon. The company views the test outcomes as validation of the solution’s readiness for further deployment.

Preparing for the Era of Quantum Computers

The transition to post-quantum cryptography is driven by the potential emergence of powerful quantum computers capable of breaking current cryptographic algorithms. A significant concern is the "harvest now, decrypt later" scenario, where encrypted data is intercepted now for future decryption.

U.S. federal agencies are expected to complete their transition to post-quantum cryptography by 2030-2031. Additionally, QuSecure highlights a target date of 2029 for the possible arrival of Q-day, when a quantum computer could pose a tangible threat to contemporary cryptography.
