Summary

  • The Ethereum layer-2 network Abstract, developed by Igloo Inc., the parent company of Pudgy Penguins, will shut down on December 15. Users must transfer their funds before this date, or they will become inaccessible.
  • The shutdown is attributed to a limited decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem, low liquidity, minimal institutional engagement, and a budget that lags behind competitors.
  • This marks the second Ethereum layer-2 closure announced within days, following the recent shutdown of the Paradigm-backed Blast.

Igloo Inc.'s Abstract, an Ethereum layer-2 network associated with Pudgy Penguins, is set to close due to difficulties in expanding beyond its niche in consumer crypto.

The announcement on X revealed that the network will cease operations on December 15. Users are required to transfer their assets via Abstract's Migration Hub or its native bridge, which has a processing delay of three hours. Any funds remaining after the deadline will be lost, the team cautioned. Additionally, engineers from Abstract will assist projects on the platform in transitioning to other networks.

The team cited stagnation in growth as a result of a constrained DeFi ecosystem, insufficient on-chain liquidity, limited institutional interaction, and a smaller budget compared to its competitors. "Running a chain that is solely focused on consumer crypto has ultimately proven to be an unsustainable model," the team explained.

According to their records, Abstract has handled over 325 million transactions, facilitated more than $6 billion in decentralized exchange volume, and generated upwards of $40 million in ecosystem revenue. Additionally, users created over 4 million Abstract Global Wallets, and notable brands such as Red Bull Racing and Disney utilized the network to engage with audiences.

Abstract is categorized as a ZK-rollup, a layer-2 solution that consolidates transactions and verifies them on Ethereum through zero-knowledge proofs, a cryptographic method of receipt verification.

Igloo's vision for Abstract was to create a platform for "consumer crypto" applications targeting everyday users, aiming to replicate the widespread popularity achieved by Pudgy Penguins through merchandise and social media engagement.

Abstract is the second Ethereum layer-2 network to announce its closure recently, following Blast, which had received support from Paradigm and revealed last week that it would shut down due to operational expenses exceeding its revenue.

Additionally, Abstract has warned users to be vigilant against impersonators, fraudulent migration sites, and misleading direct messages claiming to represent the project.
