In the United States, a wave of protests against the establishment of AI data centers has resulted in the arrest of at least 37 individuals since the start of the year. Local communities have voiced strong opposition to these developments, citing worries about their impact on power grids, excessive water usage, pollution, and favorable tax incentives for the companies involved.
Many arrests occurred during public hearings. Notably, a physics teacher in Kansas was detained for applauding at a zoning meeting, while an Oklahoma resident was arrested for violating a three-minute speaking limit. In July alone, the group Humans First organized 142 protests across 42 states, highlighting the growing discontent regarding these AI infrastructure projects.
