A new open-source operational intelligence platform named Osiris has been launched on GitHub by developer simplifaisoul. This platform serves as a real-time operational dashboard, aggregating vast amounts of open geospatial data and visualizing it on a single interactive map.
Osiris distinguishes itself from commercial alternatives like Palantir through its minimal hardware requirements. According to the README file, it can be deployed on a standard laptop using Docker or Node.js, with an image size of approximately 220 MB. Heavy computational tasks are executed client-side in the user's browser, allowing the platform to maintain a stable 60 frames per second even when displaying thousands of dynamic objects, thanks to GPU acceleration and WebGL rendering.
The platform offers over 15 switchable data layers for monitoring, including:
- Transport: Tracking global routes using ADS-B (aviation) and AIS (marine vessels) data;
- Satellite Monitoring: Integration with NASA's FIRMS environmental system, originally designed to detect wildfires but now also utilized for identifying thermal anomalies in conflict zones;
- Infrastructure and Ecology: Maps detailing major underwater internet cables, seismic activity, and air quality metrics.
Osiris also features the RECON Toolkit, a set of network reconnaissance tools that includes a TCP port scanner, DNS record resolution, WHOIS lookup, SSL inspection, and vulnerability scanning. This transforms it from a visualization platform into a comprehensive workstation.
Notably, Osiris does not require a subscription, as it sources its data from free public APIs, including those from NASA and open amateur radio databases. Additionally, the platform incurs no server maintenance costs since all processing is done locally on the user's hardware.
Understanding Palantir's Role
Palantir is known for its two primary products, Foundry and Gotham. Foundry is used in the corporate sector for managing supply chains, while Gotham is aimed at government agencies for intelligence and analytics, particularly in defense and counter-terrorism.
Gotham has become integral to U.S. intelligence operations, with significant contracts awarded to Palantir, including approximately $287 million from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency since 2014 and an $823 million contract from the U.S. Army in 2021 for an intelligence data system.
While Osiris offers a powerful analytical tool for OSINT researchers, journalists, and human rights advocates, it also raises concerns as a dual-use technology. Its user-friendly interface could be exploited by malicious actors for planning and reconnaissance activities.
