Mistral and HUMAIN have officially announced their intention to establish "sovereign AI infrastructure" within Saudi Arabia and the broader region. According to their joint statement, this initiative represents a collaboration worth "hundreds of millions of euros."
The Paris-based Mistral, known for its open-weights laboratory, will collaborate with HUMAIN, an AI firm backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, to develop and customize sophisticated models and implement AI solutions domestically and regionally.
The companies emphasized that this partnership aims to meet the increasing need for sovereign AI, which entails that data is not controlled by external entities and that models can be owned with open weights.
Mistral has been enhancing its computational capabilities through its infrastructure division, Mistral Compute. The agreement with HUMAIN allows Mistral to extend its operations eastward, enabling it to run workloads on Saudi infrastructure instead of depending solely on European or American facilities. Additionally, the companies plan a collaborative approach to market their services in Saudi Arabia, particularly targeting regulated sectors.
On the model development front, Mistral has recently released a unified open-source model featuring remote coding agents and a new Work Mode in its Le Chat interface.
