Bitcoin treasury firm Metaplanet (3350) has reported a net addition of 1,000 bitcoins in the third quarter, bringing its total holdings to 44,000 BTC, valued at approximately $3.8 billion as of September 30. This increase follows a strategic sale and repurchase aimed at enhancing liquidity and improving its credit profile.
The company initially sold 10,000 BTC for about $789.2 million, averaging $78,925 for each coin, before repurchasing 11,000 BTC at a cost of $948.7 million, averaging $86,246 per bitcoin.
Metaplanet temporarily retained the cash proceeds to illustrate its capability to meet its interest-bearing debt obligations, although these debts were not settled. Subsequently, the firm repurchased bitcoin at elevated prices. Its total bitcoin holdings now reflect a cost basis of roughly $4.33 billion, with an average cost of $98,454 per BTC.
CEO Simon Gerovich stated that the recent transactions signify aspirations that extend beyond simply accumulating bitcoin. "Our objective has been to build the leading Bitcoin financial company in Asia," he remarked.
Additionally, Metaplanet launched a Net Interest Income Strategy, focusing on investments primarily in preferred securities issued by bitcoin treasury firms. The company aims to invest about 10% to 15% of its total assets in these securities, seeking returns that exceed its funding costs to manage obligations while facilitating further bitcoin acquisitions.
Moreover, Metaplanet's options-based Bitcoin Income Generation segment reported approximately $5.4 million in revenue for Q3, reflecting a 51% decrease from Q2 and a 65% decline year-over-year. The revenue for the first nine months totaled around $35.2 million, marking eight consecutive quarters of generating income.
On Monday, Metaplanet shares closed 2% higher at 297 yen ($1.88).
