On Thursday, MetaMask launched the Agent Wallet, a self-custodial solution enabling AI agents to perform on-chain transactions within parameters set by users, marking an expansion in the realm of AI-driven cryptocurrency trading.

MetaMask indicates that this wallet is designed for traders and developers leveraging AI agents to observe market trends, pinpoint opportunities, and autonomously execute trades.

Instead of granting an AI agent unrestricted access, users can define spending limits, approve particular protocols, adjust risk levels, and choose between "Guard Mode" and "Beast Mode," which provide different degrees of automation. (Note: MetaMask is a product of Consensys, one of many investors in the independent Decrypt platform.)

The Agent Wallet is compatible with platforms like Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenClaw, Hermes, and OpenCode, as well as networks compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Additionally, it allows gas abstraction, enabling users to cover network fees using the asset being transferred rather than needing to hold the native token of the network.

MetaMask stated, “Never worry about paying for gas. Agents can transfer and swap without holding a chain's native token for gas; MetaMask settles the network fee in the token being moved.”

This launch follows MetaMask's June introduction of the Agent Wallet to around 200 early access users. This development comes as various crypto firms strive to create infrastructure for AI agents capable of managing portfolios, conducting trades, and engaging with decentralized applications. Earlier this year, Coinbase launched its Agentic Wallets in February, while MoonPay broadened its AI agent initiatives in March and later expanded its MoonAgents service to Telegram in July.

MetaMask asserts that the Agent Wallet enhances security by implementing wallet-level permissions rather than relying solely on AI agents for safe actions. They emphasize that supported transactions undergo simulation, threat scanning, and benefit from MEV protection.

The company also provides Transaction Protection coverage of up to $10,000 per month for qualifying transactions that meet security standards but still incur losses.

“This security-first approach is why Agent Wallet is built around rules, not blind delegation,” MetaMask explained. “The agent can act, but it operates within the user's parameters.”
