  • Luke Dashjr, a key figure behind the BIP-110 soft-fork initiative, has been ousted from his role as an editor of Bitcoin Improvement Proposals.
  • He faced accusations of misusing his editorial power, including trying to assign a BIP number prematurely and merging updates without proper procedures.
  • Dashjr has stated he will take a sabbatical from his position as chair and CTO of mining pool Ocean.

Luke Dashjr, a significant advocate for the BIP-110 soft-fork proposal, has been removed from his editorial role concerning Bitcoin Improvement Proposals.

This decision came shortly after the contentious BIP-110, which sought to limit the Bitcoin network's use for non-financial activities, quickly stalled after entering a signaling phase for miners and node operators to express their backing.

Dashjr, who was a leading Bitcoin developer advocating for BIP-110, was accused of misusing his editorial privileges by attempting to assign a BIP number before discussions and rapidly merging an update into the repository without adhering to established protocols.

“This is particularly significant as Luke has otherwise contributed very little to the daily operations of the BIP Editors since the additional editors started in April 2024: he has left fewer than 1% of the comments in the repository since then, and the merge action of this PR was his first since May 2024,” Bitcoin developer Mark Erhardt stated in a motion for Dashjr's removal on August 9.

In response to his dismissal, Dashjr labeled it “an abuse of power,” in a post on X. He previously denied the allegations when the motion was initially introduced.

He also mentioned that he is taking a sabbatical from his position as chair and CTO of mining pool Ocean to focus on contributing to Bitcoin and open-source initiatives.

BIP-110 aimed to create a separate Bitcoin chain with restrictions on storing non-financial data such as images and text, a trend that gained traction with the introduction of the Ordinals protocol in 2023.

However, the proposal failed to gain traction, receiving support from only about 2.6% of miners, far below the required 55% threshold for success. Consequently, the forked chain came to a standstill after mining just two blocks, while the main Bitcoin network continued to operate as usual.
