LTC$66.55, often referred to as the silver counterpart to Bitcoin's gold, has recently stood out amidst a generally weak market.Currently ranked 24th by market capitalization, LTC has seen a nearly 8% increase to reach $66, marking its highest price since January. This month alone, prices have surged by 37%, the strongest performance since November 2024, as reported by CoinDesk.
BTC$83,502.93 has experienced a 3% decline over the past 24 hours, with a modest 6% rise for the month. Other leading cryptocurrencies like ETH, XRP, and SOL are similarly underperforming compared to LTC.The precise reason behind LTC's strong performance remains uncertain. However, the Litecoin Foundation has linked it to heightened economic activity on the network.
"Yesterday, over $1 billion worth of transactions, exceeding 17 million Litecoin, were processed on the network within 24 hours. This figure, termed Adjusted Economic Volume or 'payments' by @ForceXHQ, while not a yearly record (which was $2.51 billion in May), represents a significant portion of LTC's market capitalization. This indicates robust on-chain activity and its expanding use case," the foundation communicated via X.
Another potential factor could be a self-fulfilling prophecy related to the upcoming reward halving cycle. Similar to Bitcoin, Litecoin undergoes a 50% reduction in block rewards every four years, and historically, it has been known to reach its lowest points six to twelve months prior to a new bull market. The fourth halving is scheduled for next July, which will reduce the per-block reward to 3.125 LTC.
Whether prices will continue to rise as this event approaches remains to be seen. Currently, the uptrend in LTC's price is accompanied by renewed capital inflows into derivatives linked to the token.
Regarding the larger market, some analysts believe that the negative impact from rising bond yields may be temporary.
“It’s important to remember that in 2021, Bitcoin saw a drop of over 50% from its peak before reaching new highs. Similarly, a decrease to $70K may be challenging for short-term traders but does not diminish the overall bullish sentiment,” stated Alex Kuptsikevich, chief market analyst at The FxPro, in an email.
