Joe Lubin, co-founder of Ethereum and head of ConsenSys, stated in an interview with CoinDesk on June 7, 2026, that the budget cuts, employee departures, and restructuring at the Ethereum Foundation do not indicate a crisis but rather reflect a narrowing of the organization’s focus to the core technology and values of the network.

Lubin attributed the criticism of the Ethereum Foundation to a misunderstanding of the foundation's role. He believes the organization should maintain neutrality within the ecosystem and not conflate protocol development with commercial objectives.

According to him, mass adoption, engagement with institutional players, and the development of specific areas should be handled by other organizations. Lubin asserts that the Ethereum Foundation should concentrate on the foundational technology and key principles of the network. He also noted that he does not hold a position within the foundation.

Lubin rejected the notion of a downturn for Ethereum. He linked the new wave of growth to autonomous AI agents that will conduct on-chain transactions, as well as the expansion of institutional use of the infrastructure.

The controversy arose from budget cuts, employee exits, and personnel changes at the Ethereum Foundation. CoinDesk reports that critics question the organization’s responsiveness to competitive pressures and its impact on Ethereum's market position. According to Etherscan, the network processes about 2 million transactions per day.
