HSBC, a British bank, and Ant Digital Technologies from China have successfully completed a technical test for micropayments designed for AI agents using tokenized deposits.

The testing occurred in a real-time blockchain environment, where the bots autonomously identified digital services and paid for their usage.

The experiment integrated three key elements: HSBC's tokenized deposit service, the Anvita Flow platform for AI agent interactions with digital services, and the Jovay test Layer 2 network.

Ant Digital facilitated the service discovery and payment coordination, while HSBC provided the payment infrastructure and real-time risk assessment. During the demonstration, an AI agent selected a digital service and completed the payment. The companies categorized these transactions as micropayments, typically defined as transfers under $2.

Purpose of the Test

Autonomous AI agents may need to frequently pay for digital services without human intervention for each transaction. For example, an agent could purchase data access, utilize software tools, or pay for specific computational tasks.

This model requires payments that can be initiated programmatically, processed 24/7, and verified almost in real-time. Tokenized deposits enable the representation of bank funds in a digital format suitable for integration with blockchain infrastructure.

It’s worth noting that AI agents could emerge as a significant application of blockchain technology in consumer payments, according to Franklin Templeton.
