A recent modification for Grand Theft Auto V has added 235 Flock surveillance cameras to the game, enhancing in-game law enforcement monitoring while providing players with a new target to destroy.
Created by modder WTTDOTM, the Grand Theft Automated License Plate Reader mod allows these cameras to capture player actions and report violations to the game’s authorities. Players can dismantle these cameras, with the option to save footage for online sharing.
In a TikTok promotion, WTTDOTM remarked, “Flock is a scourge on America,” reflecting a broader critique of surveillance technologies amid growing public concern over privacy issues.
WTTDOTM further explained that while the mod features 235 cameras, this number pales in comparison to the more than 100,000 cameras operated by the private surveillance company across the country, particularly in Los Angeles County, which inspired the game’s setting of Los Santos.
Privacy and Surveillance Concerns
The Flock cameras are designed to collect vehicle plate numbers and personal data to assist law enforcement with crime investigations and missing persons cases. Critics, however, raise alarms about potential misuse of this data and the implications for individual privacy.
