Summary

  • Ether.fi introduces tokenized assets and loans secured by diverse holdings.
  • Fiat accounts will accommodate over 30 currencies and payment options.
  • U.S. users will not have access to tokenized stocks and metals.

Ether.fi, a decentralized finance platform focused on Ethereum staking, is enhancing its self-custodial app by incorporating tokenized asset trading, portfolio-backed loans, and fiat accounts.

In a recent announcement, Ether.fi revealed that users can now engage in the trading of tokenized stocks, metals, and cryptocurrencies via its app. The platform has integrated a market utilizing the decentralized lending protocol Aave on Optimism, an Ethereum scaling solution, allowing users to lend assets, borrow against their portfolios without liquidating their holdings, and manage their proceeds. New fiat accounts will facilitate global deposits and withdrawals.

According to Ether.fi founder and CEO Mike Silagadze, “Initially we're supporting existing assets and select tokenized stocks and gold.” These existing assets include Ethereum, Bitcoin, Hyperliqud, and ETHFI, the governance token of Ether.fi. Silagadze added, “Quickly we'll start adding additional assets as collateral.”

Ether.fi stated that fiat accounts will be accessible to users who have completed the necessary identity verification for its payment card, though the speed of deposits and withdrawals may vary.

The platform is also rolling out automated buybacks of ETHFI and offering a 3% cashback on card transactions. Ether.fi boasts over 500,000 members and an annual transaction volume of $2 billion.

Silagadze believes that portfolio-backed loans and tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) could appeal to those who have not yet ventured into decentralized finance. “I think being able to borrow against the whole portfolio, and being able to loop RWAs is going to be popular,” he mentioned. “Also getting cashback on trades and borrows is going to create some buzz, I think.”

The newly introduced features are available to both new and existing Ether.fi users; however, trading of tokenized stocks and metals is restricted for users in the United States and certain other regions.

Silagadze emphasized that the platform's expansion aims to provide an alternative to conventional banks. “With ether.fi, we’re bridging the gap between decentralized finance and everyday financial needs,” he stated. “Our goal is to replace the traditional bank for most users and give them tools and benefits that were previously available only to institutions and high-net-worth individuals. That is the power of DeFi and self-custody.”
