Ethereum's development team is evaluating how to enhance the Hegotá upgrade, focusing on enabling private transactions without intermediary reliance.
Ethereum addresses are permanent and publicly accessible, revealing users' transaction history and balances, which poses challenges for those wishing to maintain financial confidentiality.
Currently, privacy concerns are addressed through applications built on Ethereum, but a new proposal is being considered that would integrate more privacy features directly into the network.
The main proposal under review is Frame Transactions, or Ethereum Improvement Proposal 8141 (EIP-8141), which would allow users to customize how their transactions are approved, executed, and paid, rather than adhering to a one-size-fits-all approach.
This could enable scenarios where transaction fees are covered by another party, multiple actions are consolidated into a single payment, or the cryptographic method for transaction approval is altered without needing a new account.
Toni Wahrstätter, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation and co-author of the proposal, detailed its importance in a recent post on X as the development team begins to refine the Hegotá upgrade's focus.

While privacy applications on Ethereum can obscure transaction details using cryptographic methods, these transactions still necessitate additional infrastructure, with some designs routing users through external relayers that submit transactions for them.
Frame Transactions is one of the 66 proposals being considered for the Hegotá upgrade, which is anticipated to follow this year's Glamsterdam release and be launched in 2027. Developers are now assessing what can be feasibly built, tested, and delivered on schedule.
Two additional proposals address issues that arise when multiple users transact privately using the same account. Keyed Nonces, or EIP-8250, would allow for separate transaction counters, preventing delays from one transaction from affecting others. Meanwhile, EIP-8272 would enable a transaction to validate itself against a recent cryptographic record without relying on potentially changing information.
Together, these three proposals aim to reduce the reliance on external infrastructure for privacy applications.
However, Ethereum will not become entirely private; standard ETH transfers between addresses will remain visible as they are now. The privacy features will still be handled by applications, which will simply require less external support.
It's important to note that Frame Transactions are not guaranteed to be part of the upgrade; being considered does not equate to approval for implementation.
Thus far, only one proposal has gained approval, related to censorship. Currently, block assembly is conducted by a single entity that chooses which waiting transactions to include. The approved change, FOCIL, allows a collective of network operators to compile a mandatory transaction list, removing the decision-making power from a single builder.
Other proposals aim to enhance block production speed, adjust validator rewards for network security, and prepare Ethereum for cryptographic advancements capable of withstanding quantum computing threats.
The deadline for new proposals concluded on August 6, and the fate of the remaining proposals will be determined in the upcoming core developer meetings.
