Ethereum is advancing towards its Glamsterdam upgrade, having confirmed blocks under new rules earlier this week, thus passing a crucial test ahead of a proposed public test on October 6 on the Sepolia network.
Nethermind, a software utilized by Ethereum nodes, conducted a performance evaluation on Wednesday that highlighted one of Glamsterdam's key innovations.
During this evaluation, the client executed all 2,302 tests, processing a total of 570.7 billion gas in just over three minutes, translating to an average throughput of approximately 2.9 billion gas per second.
This benchmark assessed Nethermind’s execution software rather than the entire network's speed, focusing on block-level access lists that inform Ethereum nodes about which accounts and data a block will utilize before processing begins.
This advance information allows nodes to retrieve data and verify unrelated transactions simultaneously, whereas Ethereum typically handles much of this sequentially, limiting the overall throughput per block.
Shortly after the testnet went live, Glamsterdam increased its block gas limit from 60 million to 200 million. The gas metric reflects the computational work necessary for transactions, and the elevated limit allows for a greater volume of payments, token swaps, and additional activities within each block.
Benefits for Ethereum
A 200 million gas limit would enable Ethereum to handle more transactions before users start outbidding each other for block space, potentially reducing fee spikes during trading surges or when popular token launches congest the network.
However, larger blocks are more complex to verify and could disadvantage smaller operators. Glamsterdam aims to increase capacity without making the blockchain excessively costly to operate.
Specialized builders will package transactions, while validators will verify the resulting blocks and secure the network. This upgrade aims to streamline that process and the associated payments within Ethereum's own framework, decreasing reliance on external relays.
Moreover, the time allocated for distributing block data across the network will extend from approximately two seconds to nine seconds, allowing validators more time to receive and validate the larger blocks that Glamsterdam is designed to accommodate.
As it stands, the 200 million gas limit remains a testing configuration rather than a definitive feature for Ethereum’s main network. Devnet-11 was structured as a controlled rehearsal, intentionally lacking aggressive testing scenarios.
October 6 is the target date for Glamsterdam’s deployment on Sepolia, where application teams can trial their software before the upgrade is rolled out to Ethereum users. This date is still subject to formal approval.
