Ethereum Institutional has endorsed the EIP-8198 proposal to reduce slot durations, aiming to enhance transaction efficiency on the network.
Ethereum Institutional has officially backed the EIP-8198 Quick Slots proposal, introduced by Ethlabs, on September 18. This initiative aims to transition from a fixed slot duration to a more adaptable parameter, potentially enhancing Ethereum's efficiency as institutional activity increases on-chain.

The EIP-8198 proposal seeks to eliminate the current 12-second slot duration from client software, allowing developers to customize this duration. Ethlabs suggests starting with a conservative benchmark of 10 seconds, although performance testing will ultimately determine the exact duration.
Reducing the slot duration is expected to improve transaction confirmation times, expedite price updates in on-chain markets, and lessen delays in payments and applications. This change is significant as the existing 12-second assumption is integrated into various components of Ethereum's infrastructure, including consensus clients.
To implement EIP-8198, developers will need to replace fixed values with a new system that accommodates adjustable slot durations. Adjustments to gas limits and BLOB object parameters will be necessary to maintain throughput over time. The proposal also highlights a decrease in block propagation and verification times, although it notes potential increases in computational resource demands and validator bandwidth.
Progress and Prioritization
Ethlabs proposed EIP-8198 for consideration during a meeting of Ethereum's core developers on August 6. On September 7, the Protocol Cluster of the Ethereum Foundation designated Quick Slots with a B-level priority for the upcoming Hegota update, indicating that it could be considered after higher-priority proposals are stabilized.
The Ethereum Foundation has outlined four criteria for raising Quick Slots' priority, including a complete specification of the changes, a working prototype, a thorough impact assessment, and confirmation of compatibility with future architecture changes. While research teams have shown strong support for Quick Slots, implementation engineers have raised concerns about the cascading effects of reducing slot durations.
Ethlabs has started prototyping and assessing dependencies within the ecosystem to refine the proposal further. The development roadmap for Ethereum includes plans for approximately seven hard forks through 2029, with priority proposals for the Hegota update already identified.
