Eric Haylem, a former Los Angeles police officer, has received a life sentence for the armed robbery of a 17-year-old in December 2024. The assailants broke into the victim's apartment and, under the threat of death, stole a hard drive containing Bitcoin worth $350,000. Judge Mildred Escobedo denied the defense's request for a retrial, asserting that the defendant acted out of greed. According to the prosecution, Haylem will be eligible for parole in seven years; three other individuals involved in the case have yet to face trial.
