The European Central Bank (ECB) is set to allocate a portion of its reserves to euro-denominated tokenized securities, marking a significant step into blockchain-based financial markets.
New Platform to Integrate ECB Payments with Blockchain
Purchases will be conducted using the new Eurosystem platform, known as Pontes, which facilitates settlements in central bank money. This innovative platform is designed to connect the ECB’s payment infrastructure with the emerging landscape of tokenized finance.
The ECB aims to explore the technology as an investor, involving activities such as acquiring tokenized bonds and managing portfolios. Piero Cipollone, a member of the ECB's executive board, noted, "Pontes brings the stability and trust of central bank money to the European tokenized finance ecosystem. It will give an important advantage to help it scale."
Initially, the ECB's investments will focus on securities issued by euro-area governments, regional authorities, and European supranational institutions. The exact parameters regarding the size and timing of these investments will be determined by the ECB's executive board following necessary preparatory work, which will also consider the overall development of the tokenized finance market in Europe.
Pontes represents the first phase of the Eurosystem's strategy to integrate central bank money into tokenized finance, with plans for further services and extended operational hours as the platform evolves. Full implementation is projected by 2028.
