The European Banking Authority (EBA) has urged the European Commission to consider regulating crypto lending and borrowing under the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. This includes scenarios where crypto firms facilitate access for clients to decentralized finance (DeFi) lending protocols. The regulator has suggested conducting an analysis to explore potential legislative changes.
Among the proposed measures, the EBA has highlighted the need for compliance checks for client services, limits on leverage, and additional disclosure requirements. Furthermore, the agency has indicated the possibility of establishing a certification system for DeFi protocols. According to a study conducted by the EBA and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) in 2025, crypto lending and borrowing services were available in at least 16 EU countries.
