Changpeng "CZ" Zhao, the former CEO of Binance, asserts that his incarceration did not adversely affect his business endeavors. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, he described his time in prison as a "character-building plus" while he embarks on a new venture capital career, maintaining his significant stake in the leading cryptocurrency exchange.
The pardoned ex-CEO called prison a character-building "plus" as he's pursued a venture-capital career, despite his majority stake in the world's biggest crypto exchange.
In discussing his prison sentence, CZ explained that he has not encountered any difficulties in business relationships post-release, as many understand he was not engaged in fraudulent activities. "Once we can explain, 'Look, this is the Bank Secrecy Act, this is the violation; there's no fraud,' many people confuse that, right? But once they understand … they actually trust you more," he stated during the interview.
Now 49, CZ is transitioning into a post-prison, post-CEO phase of his career, focusing on advisory roles for firms he invests in, rather than returning to Binance or its U.S. operations. As the 17th richest person globally according to Forbes, he emphasizes that his motivations extend beyond mere profit.
Reflecting on his past compliance oversights, he expressed no resentment toward his U.S. prison experience, although he acknowledged that it disrupted Binance's earlier growth trajectory. "I should have spent more time to learn about it much earlier on, but I was not living in the U.S.... I didn't realize at the time that U.S. laws actually apply globally," he admitted.
The blind spot
His challenges began when Binance rapidly expanded, placing him in a position where he struggled to navigate the legal complexities of operating in the U.S. The U.S. Justice Department's accusations in 2023 were severe, claiming that he and Binance failed to implement essential measures to prevent money laundering and sanctions violations, allowing criminals to exploit the platform.
CZ's legal troubles culminated in a plea deal that resulted in a four-month federal prison sentence, a rare punishment for such violations. He noted that while many who have served time often feel their sentences were too harsh, he respects the judge's decision, viewing the experience as a past chapter. "I respect it, so this is water under the bridge," he said.
During his time in a low-security prison in California, CZ recalled being viewed as a financial expert by fellow inmates. He used the time to write his memoir, "Freedom of Money," which he found to be a therapeutic process.
Out of sight
After completing his sentence, CZ sought to distance himself from the U.S. for a while. "I basically wanted to stay away from the U.S. as far as possible," he said, preferring to remain out of the public eye. Upon attending a crypto event in Dubai post-release, he received a warm welcome from attendees.
In a surprising turn, the U.S. government later reached out to him for support, with President Donald Trump advocating for his pardon in 2025. "They said that what he did is not even a crime... I gave him a pardon at the request of a lot of very good people," Trump stated.
The pardon has allowed CZ to move forward without the legal baggage from his previous plea agreement. He recognizes the U.S.'s ability to self-correct and expresses a desire to contribute to the growth of crypto both domestically and internationally.
Despite the industry's inclination towards political engagement, CZ has no plans to involve himself in U.S. politics. Instead, he focuses on investing in impactful companies, noting that his past experiences have not hindered his professional relationships. "Sometimes it actually works as a plus," he remarked, emphasizing how overcoming adversity can enhance one's character.
While he hasn't ruled out a return to a CEO role, he currently finds more fulfillment in supporting other founders. "Being a CEO is a very, very time-consuming, very tough kind of job," he said, adding, "I'm kind of taking a breather."
Overall, CZ feels he still has plenty of time to shape his future endeavors. "I'm not young, but I'm not super old, so at this age I can still do a lot of stuff," he concluded.
